If a band delivers a world-class set to a crowd that could comfortably fit in your lounge, does it still count? At Trenchtown on Friday night, Brazilian groove-masters Blue Mar didn’t just count—they converted, turning a modest turnout into a masterclass in musical joy.

Kicking things off, local openers Housedads leaned into their name with glorious self-awareness. Imagine if your neighbour’s garage band discovered feelings and tone pedals—then brewed an album over craft beer and good therapy. Equal parts groove and grown-up reflection, their warm, unfussy sound landed perfectly in Trenchtown’s laid-back space. They were like comfort food for your ears—if that comfort food also knew how to play in 7/8 time.

Sadly, Pixie Whip didn’t take the stage, having communicated earlier with the team that, due to time and technical constraints, it would be best for the remaining bands to proceed uninterrupted. The call was made in good faith to keep the night running smoothly.

Enter Blue Mar, dialling up the energy like they’d just stepped off a main stage, not into a half-full bar. Their sound—rich in vintage rock, spiced with blues and a heavy dash of Brazilian funk—was tight, vibrant, and infectiously playful. The secret weapon? Two percussionists so in sync they may as well share a heartbeat. Bongos, shakers, side snares—they made rhythm feel like a flirtatious conversation, complete with dramatic pauses and cheeky winks.

“We’re just incredibly humbled to be back in South Africa,” one of the band members said after the show, still glowing from the set. “I played here in 2022 with just a drummer. This new lineup—it’s been a dream to mix Brazilian flavour with rock and blues. The scene here is so full of talent. I wish more South African bands toured in Brazil.”

The room wasn’t packed, but honestly? That’s not the headline. The real story was musicianship, joy, and the unmistakable magic that happens when artists play for the love of it. Trenchtown, with its criminally underpriced loaded fries, pool tables, and outrageously kind staff (special kudos to Chantal, repping the daisy bucket hat like a legend), added charm. Blue Mar brought the fire.

Luckily, Cape Town gets one more shot to catch the magic before they head up north—Blue Mar are opening for local legends Shortstraw tonight at District, as part of the Foul Play gig.

So Cape Town—next time these guys hit the stage, do yourself a favour: show up.
