Newest single by Teagan, ‘Lock You Down’, hits like a ray of December sunshine—a track that somehow feels both deeply familiar and refreshingly original. The Cape Town-based singer-songwriter has found a sweet spot between glossy pop hooks and the airy, upbeat sensibilities of amapiano. This isn’t just another throwaway summer tune; it’s a layered piece that radiates confidence, underscored by warm percussion and a chorus that practically begs you to sing along while dancing barefoot under the sun.

The opening moments feel like a private glimpse into Teagan’s headspace—relaxed and sipping white wine, settling into a groove that soon blossoms into a full-on summer anthem. When those amapiano beats slip in, the track pivots gracefully, never feeling forced. “Everybody knows I wanna be the one to lock you down,” she proclaims, delivering a chorus that’s at once flirtatious and unabashedly honest, capturing the spark of new love with a directness that’s disarmingly real.

Teagan’s decision to fold amapiano textures into her pop framework wasn’t part of a pre-planned stylistic pivot but rather an organic moment of creativity. “I’ve always been drawn to amapiano’s distinctive South African sound and overall vibe. During a writing session with Blessing Biyandu the pianist from The Hii ROLLERS, my producer Ben Reid, and Theo Mulder from Kloudink, we were working on a classic pop track. Things were going well until Blessing suddenly started clapping out an amapiano beat. It instantly struck me as the perfect summer sound, and we knew we had to change direction.” The result? What she calls a “pop-piano” fusion. “To me this is what writing sessions with different musicians are all about. Bringing new ideas, styles and perspectives into your own music to create something really cool,” she says.

From here on, ‘Lock You Down’ feels tailor-made for summer playlists, parties, and festival stages. Teagan’s plans don’t stop with this single, “My focus for next year is on releasing music and performing live,” she says, “I have enough material for two EPs, and I’m currently in the mastering stage, fine-tuning every detail. I’m still deciding whether to release singles leading up to the EPs or drop them in full. Perhaps my audience could help me with that!” With festival appearances already in the works and plenty of new music on the horizon, Teagan is poised for a breakout year.

If this track is any indication, Teagan is charting a course that’s vibrant, flexible, and undeniably South African—just right for the season ahead.

I can’t play any musical instruments or sing, so this is my contribution to the local music scene — which I love immensely. I can’t touch my toes, but that has held me back only slightly in life. My hobbies include reading, beer, bringing up Let’s Get Local when no one asked, writing, and surprising people with my pool skills. I believe somehow all of this will lead me to Dave Grohl.
